Improv
Writing
Sometimes known as automatic writing, or spontaneous writing,
improvisational writing starts with the premise that you simply put pen
to paper and start writing. Leave your judge and critic behind and
break out of your usual constraints. Let the words fly. Get crazy!
Depending on your use for improv writing, you can always return to your
writing to revise, if you are producing a piece that requires more
precision and perhaps a cohesive structure. You can also use improv
writing for others reasons such as:
- Break writer's block
- Try something new
- Prime your pumps to
get the creative juices and words flowing
- Work thru your own
personal issues
- Nurture your inner
artist
- Create innovative
works of art
- Brainstorm new ideas
- Collaborate from a
distance on works of literature
- Build increments of
writing that lead to longer pieces
- Start that novel
- Loosen up that novel
- Develop your acting
range and deepen your characters
- Explore new
territory
Improv writing frees you up to get started, keep going, and move
forward toward your writing, artistic, and personal goals.
